34. Civil Protection and Climate Vulnerability (CIVILCLIM)
Beschrijving: The project explores the link between civil protection and climate change. The aim is to investigate which factors determine the capacity for local adaptation to climate change by studying long-term institutional learning within civil protection institutions in the wake of extreme weather events. A key concern is to develop knowledge for more effective long-term proactive measures that will reduce the vulnerability of society to extreme weather events. The research is led by three research questions: 1) What can we learn from historical examples of implementing proactive measures by civil protection institutions on reducing vulnerability towards extreme weather events? 2) Does climate change represent substantially new challenges for civil protection institutions? 3) Does working with climate change imply a need for institutional changes within civil protection institutions?

35. ECLAT-COAST: The influence of climate & weather on tourist demand in Europe's coastal zones: analysis and exploration
Beschrijving: Climatic conditions evidently influence tourism patterns, but the magnitude of this influence, and its mechanisms are poorly understood. Current assessments of tourism´s vulnerability to climate change therefore lack a solid basis. We propose to empirically study the current mechanisms of climatic influence on coastal tourism to determine the vulnerability to climate change of key tourism stakeholders. In addition, we propose to explore by means of scenario analysis the implications of climate change for the spatial and temporal distribution of tourism in Europe. Case studies in the Netherlands and Spain will yield an in-depth understanding of local climate dependencies and vulnerabilities.

36. INTARESE
Beschrijving: INTARESE is a 5-year project, funded by the EU, on developing and applying new, integrated approaches to the assessment of environmental health risks and consequences, in support of European policy on environmental health. It brings together a team of internationally lead scientists in the areas of epidemiology, environmental science and biosciences. ICIS will primarily look at the health effects of climate change (e.g., temperature extremes) and UV-radiation.

37. Klimaatverandering en aanpassingsstrategieën voor de gezondheid van mensen in Europa (cCASHh)
Beschrijving: This research project, will try to answer questions regarding how communities and individuals could adapt to climate change. Adaptation assessment is now seen as a priority by scientists and policy makers. The health of populations in Europe will be affected in the coming decades by global climate changes. Climate affects health in a variety of ways. The direct effect of weather on health includes the impacts of floods and heatwaves. Climate change also may affect the seasonal patterns of infectious diseases, particularly foodborne diseases that increase in summer, and those diseases transmitted by ticks or mosquitoes.
